I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: Aug. 26 – 27

You’ll see some pretty interesting vehicles on the road these next few days, as travelers from all over head to Burning Man. If you aren’t off to the Playa yourself, there will be plenty of fun around town to keep you and your family occupied. The second annual Family Fun Day in Mills Park is your best bet for kids of all ages. This week’s free concert at Brewery Arts Center features the Dusty Green Bones. Don’t forget your dancing shoes; they’re sure to keep you on your feet.

SATURDAY:

  • -- Breakfast and Bowling at Carson Lanes (breakfast served 7:30am -11am, unlimited bowling 9am-12pm; $13, $8 kids 8 and younger)
  • -- Muscle Powered One Hour Trash Mob: along the Multi-Use Path that follows the freeway near College Parkway - Meet up at parking lot between Dotty’s Casino and US Bank just north of the Walmart Parking lot off College Parkway (8am-9am; Gloves, trash bags, and trash pickers will be provided; please dress for the weather)
  • -- Coffee and Donuts with Experimental Aircraft Association, Sierra Chapter 403 at 2500 E. College Pkwy (8am-12pm, all welcome)

Fallon is known for their Heart of Gold melons, and this weekend is known for the Cantaloupe Festival. A carnival, county fair, and live music round out the annual event.

Musicians will find more of their own at the monthly jam in Silver City. Bring an instrument if you’d like to play along, but an audience is always welcome if you’d rather just listen.

A starry summer night is even more impressive through a telescope. When weather permits, the Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College has a star party every Saturday night once the sun goes down.

A short climb and some uneven footing in the dark can get tricky so red flashlights are encouraged; This event is free, but donations are accepted)

Weekends fly by way too quickly. Enjoy the last few days of August with a ride to Virginia City aboard the Virginia and Truckee Steam Train. Take a peek inside the historic Wungnema House on the east side of Mills Park, courtesy of the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation. If you are over 21, try your hand at BINGO in the Carson City Senior Center. Even if you aren’t a big winner, the Meals on Wheels program benefits from your afternoon of fun.
